Abstract The variational approach is applied to the study on the effect of Coulomb interaction between electrons on the dimerization in a one-dimensional commensurability-two Peierls system, such as trans-polyacetylene. For the case of omitting direct repulsion between electrons in the bonds between sites W, it is confirmed that the weak interactions tend to enhance the dimerization; but when W is included, this enhancement will be attenuated. If |W| is sufficiently large, the net effect of electron-electron interactions will reduce the magnitude of the electron-phonon-induced dimerization.

Altmetric calculates a score based on the online attention an article receives. Each coloured thread in the circle represents a different type of online attention. The number in the centre is the Altmetric score. Social media and mainstream news media are the main sources that calculate the score. Reference managers such as Mendeley are also tracked but do not contribute to the score. Older articles often score higher because they have had more time to get noticed. To account for this, Altmetric has included the context data for other articles of a similar age.
