  • Coherence resonances on distinct timescales of neural firing

    • Coherence resonance (CR) in noise-induced subthreshold neural firings has been extensively studied, and it is well established that neural firing exhibits diverse patterns across multiple timescales. In this study, we partition the neural firings of the Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neuron model into two distinct timescales — small and large — to investigate coherence resonance at each timescale individually, as well as across the mixed timescales as a whole. Our results show that CR at the smaller timescale emerges primarily when noise-induced firings occur simultaneously at both timescales, whereas CR at the larger and mixed timescales tends to persist over a broader range of parameters. For nonlinear systems possessing multiple markedly disparate timescales, it is methodologically justified to examine their coherence properties separately. These findings provide broader insights into investigating coherence in other nonlinear systems characterized by multiscale dynamics.
