The function U ∼ ( x ) by modifying the function in the interval [τ −c, τ + c]. The arrival of a pulse with strength ε′ in this interval can induce contracting dynamics in the sense that the phase difference of two active firing oscillators decreases, while other pulses can induce expanding dynamics.
