(a) Gaussian noise model: noises were added to the simulation data to study the influence of noise on model resolution. (b) Thermal fluctuation model: a structure ensemble was first generated to mimic the structure heterogeneity. Each single particle projection was simulated based on a randomly picked structure from the ensemble. Three representative models for GroEL are shown in panel (b): the original structure is in gray; the yellow and blue structures were generated using normal mode perturbations.
