(color online) (a) Crystal structures of three different phases. The open circles correspond to the parent structure without modulation (phase II). In phase I, there are two Raman active stretching ( A g ( S ) , B 3 g ( S ) ) and librational ( A g ( L ) , B 3 g ( L ) ) modes, while in phase V, only the amplitude (AMP) mode is Raman active. Raman spectra obtained for solid iodine up to 30 GPa (b) and for solid bromine up to 108 GPa (c), respectively. Open and closed circles correspond to X bands in phase I and new bands in phase V, respectively. Reprinted with permission from Ref. [7], copyright 2005 by the American Physical Society.
