Raman sideband cooling of rubidium atoms in optical lattice

(color online) Adiabatically loading process of the optical lattice with red detuning of 20 GHz. Trapped atoms are loaded adiabatically by using a 3-ms linear ramp beginning 3 ms before the end of the PGC. Atoms are held in the lattice for 10 ms, and then released adiabatically to free flight for 15 ms before imaging, so that the top and bottom atom clouds have drop times of 15 ms and 25 ms respectively.
