Fractal dynamics in the ionization of helium Rydberg atoms

Schematic view of the ionization of Rydberg atoms. The atom is placed in an electric field F (or magnetic field B) that is oriented along the z axis and perpendicular to the detector plane. If the ionized electron absorbs a photon, the waves propagate outward in all directions, and the electron escapes from the atom along direct or indirect trajectories to the detector.
